What Is a Construction Punch List?
A construction punch list is a document created near the end of a project that lists work items that need to be completed, corrected, or finished before final payment and project closeout. The term comes from the old practice of literally punching holes in a paper list to mark completed items.
Punch lists are typically created during a final walkthrough and are used by owners, builders, and contractors to ensure every detail is addressed before the project is considered complete.
When to Create a Punch List
The punch list is created when the project is substantially complete — typically 90% or more finished. This is the "last 10%" phase where all the finishing touches, corrections, and minor issues are identified and resolved.
For best results, walk each room methodically, inspect every surface and system, and document each issue with its exact location and a photo. This is where tools like BlueTape-AI can save significant time — you can import an existing list or create items on the go.

Tips for an Effective Punch List
- 1.Be specific. Instead of "fix door," write "Master bedroom closet door — doesn't latch, hinge needs adjustment."
- 2.Take photos. A photo makes every item clearer and reduces disputes about what needs fixing.
- 3.Assign to the right trade. Painting issues go to the painter, plumbing to the plumber. Learn how builders organize this.
- 4.Set urgency levels. Not everything is equally critical. Safety issues come first, cosmetic items can wait.
- 5.Track completion. Use a system where items move through clear stages: open, in progress, done, approved.
